Head of Curriculum

Employability Solutions Ltd is looking for an inspirational leader to play a crucial role, at this time of innovation and growth, in the development of our independent schools in West Yorkshire and Liverpool. Employability Solutions was founded in 2012 and is an award-winning social enterprise and alternative education provider working in partnership with local authorities and secondary schools across Merseyside and Kirklees. Our company motto is “It’s your time!” and our provision is designed to provide a wealth of opportunities for our students to find their moments to shine through a responsive, varied curriculum that is practical, creative and physical in essence. The right person for this role will be forward thinking and dedicated individual with a strong track record at leadership level and a desire to improve outcomes for some of the most vulnerable young people in both regions. We require a committed and highly skills professional who will drive plans to broaden our curriculum.

Location of Post

This post will be based in Huddersfield but may involve travel between centres in Liverpool and West Yorkshire so will suit someone with the flexibility and willingness to do this.

Purpose of the post

The role of Head of Curriculum will be an essential addition to the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and has arisen due to the growth of the provision and the key purpose is to develop and promote a dynamic alternative curriculum.

Key responsibility areas:

✔ Lead and manage the quality of the curriculum day to day.

✔ Strong leadership and performance management of the teaching and learning team.

✔ Lead on the development and enrichment of a robust, progressive alternative curriculum across key stages 3 to 5, across the organisation holding responsibility for evaluation of the intent, implementation, and impact of it.

✔ Act as the designated Equality and Diversity lead to ensure an inclusive curriculum.

✔ Lead on staff training and curriculum related CPD promoting a continuous learning culture and ensuring that support and development of staff is a key part of any quality assurance processes.

✔ To be responsible for the development, maintenance, and implementation of all curriculum related policies and procedures.

✔ Oversee the annual reporting systems including parents’ review days, careers events, home school reports and one-page profiles.

To provide input related to the development of curriculum in the following areas:

Policy and Procedure

✔ To assist the CEO and SLT in formulating policy and procedures that both ensure regulatory compliance and efficient organisation of the school.

✔ To support with monitoring compliance across all areas of the school to ensure successful inspections.

Finance and Resources

✔ To assist the CEO and SLT in formulating and implementing a School Strategic Plan, underpinned by sound financial planning, which ensures students achieve high standards and make outstanding academic and personal progress, increase teacher effectiveness, and secures continued school improvement.


✔ Oversee the curriculum related part of induction of new members of teaching staff, including managing ECTs and work placements to promote high quality teaching and learning and consistency.

✔ Chair fortnightly curriculum meetings with cross-site curriculum team to foster a whole team approach where ideas and innovation is valued.

Student Development and Wellbeing

✔ To liaise with the SEND and pastoral teams to ensure that the curriculum supports the wrap-around approach to development and wellbeing.

✔ To have a well-informed overview of students’ participation in all trips and outside enrichment activities.

Person specification

Head of Curriculum

The successful candidate is likely to possess all or most of the following attributes:

✔ Educated to degree level or equivalent.

✔ Qualified Teacher Status and/or Assessor qualifications.

✔ Proven experience of teaching and learning excellence in the classroom and curriculum development.

✔ A sound working knowledge of recent developments in curriculum and knowledge of a range of core subject qualifications.

✔ An enthusiasm and commitment to Continuing Professional Development.

✔ Substantial and successful management experience, either as a Senior Leadership Member or Head of Department.

✔ Believe in a solution-based approach to problems with a talent for thinking creatively ‘outside of the box’.

✔ A collaborative person with a proven ability to build positive working relationships, negotiate with and influence individual and relevant groups.

✔ Able to communicate with a wide range of audiences including students, parents, carers, teachers, support staff and board members, other schools and local authorities as well as external contacts required by the role.

✔ A knowledge of and experience of working with a range of successful teaching and learning strategies to meet the needs of all students, especially within an alternative education provision context.

✔ An understanding of assessment strategies and use of assessment to inform the next stages of learning.

✔ Understanding of the characteristics of an alternative provision learning environment and the key elements of successful behaviour management and student support within such a unique community.

✔ A strong performance management ethos with an emphasis on accountability for goals, standards and continuing professional development.

✔ Above all the successful candidate will have an enjoyment of working with young people in an alternative education provision environment and working in a community that values compassion, respect, forgiveness and responsibility.
